Few everyday items feel as ordinary, yet carry as much history, as a humble bar of soap. This unassuming ‘thing’ sitting by your sink has survived empires, sparked underground smuggling rings, and somehow managed to stay basically unchanged for 5,000 years.
I'll be honest, I had never really given it much thought until I started digging up the past. Now? I can't look at a bar the same way. Are you ready?.. Let me take you down this rabbit hole.
A DEEP, ANCIENT (AND INDUSTRIAL) ORIGIN
The earliest known evidence of soap making dates back nearly 5,000 years to ancient Babylon. Archaeologists uncovered Sumerian clay tablets from 2800 BC detailing recipes made from water, alkali (wood ash), and cassia oil.
But here is the twist: rather than for personal hygiene, these early formulas were actually used to wash wool and textiles before they were dyed. To the ancients, soap wasn't a beauty product, it was industrial-grade cleaner.
Not long after, the Egyptians expanded on these uses. The Ebers Papyrus, (a medical text from 1550 BC), records soap-like recipes made with animal fats, vegetable oils, and alkaline salts. They began using it for bathing and beauty regimens, but also as a medicine to treat skin diseases.
SOAP SPREADS THROUGH EMPIRES AND TRADE
As civilizations expanded, so did soap-making knowledge. The ancient Romans and Phoenicians utilized early cleansing methods, and as Mediterranean trade routes opened up, ingredients like olive oil, laurel oil, and different plant ashes became more widely available.

In 1688, King Louis XIV even issued the Edict of Colbert, institutionalizing Marseille soap by laying down strict rules requiring it to be cooked in large boilers using only pure vegetable oils. This was a purity law that cemented the region's reputation as a leader in natural, plant-based soap.
THE BIZARRE 19TH- CENTURY SOAP SMUGGLERS
For a long time, Europe’s elite enjoyed beautifully crafted bars while the working class relied on harsh, homemade versions or simply skipped the luxury entirely. If you want to know how soap transformed into an everyday household item, the answer isn’t just industrialization, it is also a story of high-stakes tax evasion.
In 1712, Great Britain introduced a crushing "Soap Tax"(Some things never change). The government treated soap as a luxury item and taxed it so heavily that it tripled the price of a basic bar. To protect this tax revenue, the law was aggressively enforced. Government inspectors held keys to soap-makers’ boiling equipment, locking it up overnight to ensure no unsanctioned batches were made secretly.
This sparked a MASSIVE, underground black market. Illegal soap boilers operated in secret, and soap smuggling became a lucrative, dangerous trade. Artisans even fled to Ireland, where soap remained tax-free, just to manufacture their products legally before smuggling them back across the Irish Sea!!
SCIENCE, CHEMISTRY AND MASS PRODUCTION
The turning point came down to two major shifts in the 19th century: science and politics.
First, A French chemist; Nicolas Leblanc discovered a way to synthesize soda ash from common salt. Soda ash is the alkali needed to turn fat into soap. Before this, soap makers had to burn massive quantities of wood or seaweed to get ash. Leblanc's process made the core chemical ingredient incredibly cheap and easy to mass-produce.
Second, after nearly 150 years of public outrage, British Chancellor William Gladstone finally repealed the hated soap tax in 1853.
With the tax lifted and chemical costs down, the industrial revolution took full control of the soap industry. Factories popped up across the globe, cranking out uniform, inexpensive bars.
This era also birthed the very first massive corporate ad campaigns. Instead of buying a generic chunk of soap cut from a giant block at the local grocer, people began buying specific brands.
THE ARTISAN RENAISSANCE: GOING BACK TO THE SCIENCE OF SLOW
After a century of factory-made, synthetic detergent bars dominating grocery shelves, something shifted. Today, we are seeing a massive revival of small-batch soap making. This is the exact traditional technique that requires mixing pure vegetable oils and plant butters with lye (sodium hydroxide) at room temperature. Unlike mass production facilities that use high heat to force instant saponification, artisan makers rely purely on chemistry and patience.
The modern appeal isn’t just about the nostalgia of the process; it is a direct response to a growing demand for ingredient transparency. Commercial "soap" bars are often technically synthetic detergents filled with petroleum-based foaming agents, parabens, and artificial hardeners.
Modern artisans are replacing those chemical cocktails with ingredients you could almost find in a kitchen or garden.
HOW TO SPOT A TRUELY NATURAL BAR
Watch for the word "Saponified" Real soap ingredients will often be listed as Saponified Olive Oil or Sodium Olivate. If the first ingredient is Sodium Cocoyl Isethionate or Sodium Laureth Sulfate, you are looking at a synthetic chemical detergent, not natural soap.
Feel for the weight and texture. Traditional cold-process soap has slightly irregular edges and a rustic feel. If a bar is perfectly glossy, completely uniform, and rock-hard, it was likely pressed by a high-speed factory machine.
Look for glycerin: Mass producers strip glycerin out of soap to use in expensive lotions. Artisan soap naturally retains its glycerin, which acts as a humectant to draw moisture into your skin.
